You'll design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems using modern TypeScript, helping shape technical decisions while delivering meaningful outcomes at pace.WHY JOIN THE TEAMThis role sits within the bbc.com worldwide team, focused on delivering solutions and content for our global (non-UK) audience. The platform is supported by three teams: front-end, CMS/tooling, and back-end systems. The team is known for being friendly, open, and supportive. bbc.com is part of the wider Studios Product Group, which manages major BBC brands and content distribution.YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:Backend Engineering Excellence
- Build and maintain robust APIs, services, and backend components using TypeScript (Node.js) and modern cloud infrastructure.
- Writing high-quality code that meets reliability, security,and performance standards.
- Lead by example on code quality, refactoring, and technical best practices. System Design & Technical Collaboration
- Contribute to architectural decisions, ensuring systems are scalable, observable, and aligned to business needs.
- Work with Solution Architects and Tech Leads to evolve our distributed systems, data models, and service boundaries.
- Balance technical debt reduction with delivery priorities. Product & Delivery Focus
- Partner with Product Managers to break down work into deliverable, high- impact increments.
- Participate in planning, estimation, and technical discovery sessions.
- Ensure backend systems are observable, maintainable, and instrumented fordata-driven iteration. Mentoring & Team Development
- Support the growth of engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
- Promote engineering standards, continuous improvement, and a healthy, inclusive team culture. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with Frontend, Infrastructure, Data, and Security teams to ship reliable, secure, and scalable solutions.Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Backend engineering experience building production-grade systems. - Good knowledge of TypeScript for backend development (Node.js ecosystem).
- Experience operating within cloud-based platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and event-driven architectures.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and operational best practices. DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Experience working with other languages, especially Go, would be beneficial.
